Short Essay #2:Why we need progress with liberty. A goal of every true American is liberty. The liberty to pursue their own interests; the liberty to speak their mind; the liberty to have friends of their own choosing; the liberty to love whomever they chose; the liberty to direct the fruits of their own labor. Every true American wants the concept of liberty to remain a constant in our ever evolving society. Fortunately, we, as Americans, have influence over the direction that our society will evolve. We can move in the direction of more (or less) materialism. We can move towards more (or less) centralized decisions by our government. We can continue to move towards seemingly unending wars. We may choose to move in the direction of decreased foreign military interventions. We, as a society, have many options. The direction that I believe that we will move towards is increased liberty. I believe we will allow for more individual expression, for less dictation of the actions of others, and for people to choose the allocation of all of their assets. Movement of our society in any other direction, than towards liberty, would not be progress. Progress is movement towards a goal. Movement in ANY other direction, than towards liberty, is moving away from our goal. Examples of societal movements that are not progress include: governments increasing preferential treatment of small groups of people, governments attempting to dictate moral stances on populaces, or governments increasing the quantities of information that it keeps from its people. Societal movement towards more government control of our lives is not progress. Instead, we can, and should, move towards more government transparency, towards allowing people to make more decisions that affect them, towards less governmental favoritism, and towards individual freedom to live one’s lives as they see fit. For Americans, the goal is liberty. That has been the goal from day one. Every American should demand Progress with Liberty.
