Short story - *Saturday* Mom, why are you still sleeping? Im getting late. Mom!, her six year old princess was shouting on top of her voice. She looked at her with half opened eyes. Her little princess was sitting by her bed side trying to tie her shoe laces. What is it sweety? Why are you up so early? Stella, her daughter seemed so engrossed in tying her shoe laces that she didnt listen to her mother. But when she saw her, she immediately turned her feet towards her mother signalling her to tie her laces. She did what her daughter wanted and asked her again why she was up so early. Oh, mom. You are getting old. You dont even remember. Get up fast. We dont have time to waste. We will get late. Get uppppp. Saying this she held her mothers arm with her little hands and pulled her with all her might to make her mother get off from the bed. She looked at her daughters inocent face which was full of excitement and a smile curved at her face. All her pain and troubles were forgotten whenever she looked at her innocent face. So without questioning further, she got up, wore her robe and told her daughter that she was ready to go. Stella held her mothers hand and lead her out of the house. It was an autumn morning but being a hill station, fog covered the sky. The morning breeze was chilled, just like a winter day. But nothing was stopping this little girl from going to that place, for it was the day, the day she was waiting for since a week. Stella, honey where are we going? Its cold and Im not even wearing a sweater. Lets go back. Oh mom, no time to go back. We are already late. You can take my sweater if you want to. Now keep walking. She said in a panting voice. She laughed at her daughters innocent reply. She had totally no idea where they were going but she didnt want to stop her daughter. So, without saying anything she decided to follow her princess. She saw Stella holding a piece of paper in her hand but then she stayed quiet for she didnt want her daughter to scold her again. After walking for around fifteen minutes, Stella stopped, confused whether she should take the left turn or the right. Mom, which way is the Bus stop? But, why do you want to go to the bus stop? Mom!!!! Uh, left. But… Stella without even waiting for her mother to complete her sentence started walking to the left. Within minutes they reached the bus stop. Stella finally took a sigh of relief when she saw no one around. Thank God mommy, we are on time. We are not late. But sweety, why are we here? You forgot it mom. Its SATURDAY. Finally daddy is coming home. She was shocked to hear that. She couldnt understand why her daughter was suddenly talking about her dad. But, Stel... Honey who told you that? Stella lifted her hand and showed her mother the piece of paper she was holding. It was a letter from her dad. Mommy, I found this in your room last week. Daddy wrote he promises to come home on Saturday, and its SATURDAY. Hell be on his way. Tears started rolling down her cheeks when she saw her husbands letter that he wrote to her four years back. She had the same excitement when she read that letter and came to the bus stop to receive her husband. He did fulfill his promise but in a coffin. For the first time she didnt smile at her daughters innocence. She hugged her tight and cried for the first time in front of her daughter. Mom, whats wrong? Why are you crying? Daddy isnt coming back sweety. He will never come back. Stellas eyes that were full of excitement earlier were now full of tears for she knew her mom never lied to her. But still, she was not ready to believe. But, mom he promised and its Saturday. Nikita Sharma
