Short synopsis of this article: The company did not give a FK about anybody else. From Oct. 28 to Nov. 6, IEPA received 35 complaints, mostly of sand emissions from several 60-foot tall piles of silica sand at the mine site. A few other complaints dealt with coal combustion from a coal pile that ignited spontaneously. ... An inspector visited NWS on Nov. 6 and visited homes that had been affected by sand blowing from NWS piles. There was evidence of silica sand on vegetation (grass, leaves, soil), vehicles (windshield, trim, hood), outdoor furniture (cushions, table top), patio floors and other surfaces in the backyard. Next, the inspector observed plant operations for about 30 minutes before alerting the sand company to his presence. During that time, he observed sand blowing off of sand piles. When he parked near them he stated he could hear the sand particles continuously hitting the state car, and “an attempt to leave the car and take photos was aborted, due to eyes full of sand.” Upon settling back inside the car, the inspector noticed sand had accumulated on his dashboard and other car surfaces during the few seconds he had the door open. Later, the inspector noted he could feel sand hitting his face when he was southeast of the mining site on a public road.
