Shortly before 1650 on December 22, the Brentwood Fire Department was notified of a structure fire at the BP Gas Station located at 725 Suffolk Avenue. When Second Assistant Chief Michael Derbyshire arrived on scene, he immediately had the fire reactivated as a working fire, with heavy fire showing on the number one side, where the mechanics bays were. As the department units arrived on scene, Chief Derbyshire immediately directed unit 3-2-5 to put its deck gun into operation. With Chief Javier Valentin assuming command when he arrived on scene, there was fire throughout the structure. A total of three handlines were put into use as were two aerials, one of which came on a mutual aid request from the Central Islip Fire Department. In addition to Central Islips aerial, mutual came from the Bay Shore Fire Department with their FAST team, an engine from the Islip Fire Department to the scene, and from the East Brentwood Fire Department to stand by at Brentwoods HQ. Brentwood Legion Ambulance was on scene in case of illness or injury, with one firefighter was transported to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries. The Town of Islip was represented on scene by its Fire Marshals Office as well as the Town Building Department. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation responded to the scene due to the nature of the establishmnt. The County Department of Health was also notified to respond not only because the gas station had a small convenience store within but also because smoke from the fire was billowing into neighboring food establishments.
