Shot from Devou Park. January 1977. The U.S. Department of Commerce said the Ohio River at Cincinnati has frozen 14 times since 1874, the last two being 1977 and 1978. On Jan. 18, 1977, Cincinnati set a record when the air temperature fell to 25 below zero. There were 28 days that winter below zero. It was brutally cold in January 1978 too, but not quite as cold. Mostly it was snowy. The monthly snowfall was 31.5 inches, a record, and 53.9 for the winter, also a record. That winter came to a head with the legendary blizzard of 1978, on Jan. 25-26, when 7 inches of snow fell in Cincinnati, with 60 mph winds whipping drifts as high as 12 feet. Visibility was zero.
