Should Muslims Condemn Acts of Terror? I think weve been doing - TopicsExpress

Should Muslims Condemn Acts of Terror? I think weve been doing it long enough to know that its not working. No matter how much we do it, some will still think were not doing it enough. Or, they might even say that were not sincere when we do it, or that we dont mean it. But I have more concerns for the long term. Im afraid that this whole business of condemnation is putting our whole community in the U.S. on the defensive, big time. Its stalling our thinking. Its giving the wrong impression of who we are. If I keep saying that I didnt rob the bank, does it not give some impression to people that somehow Im connected to robbing banks or robbery in general. So when we play to their hands, arent we implicating ourselves? Arent we exercising some amount of self-incrimination, at least implicitly? In Islam, were taught that no one is responsible for someone elses actions. I think its about time to implement this principle. Im not responsible for events occurring overseas, not the slightest bit. I dont have a say in them, I dont control them, and I sure cant stop them. In fact, we average people Muslims and non-Muslims alike, have NO CLUE of whats going on over there. By the way, this is only happening to Muslims!! I have never seen a Christian apologize to what happened in Bosnia. And they shouldnt! If youre a Christian who lives in the U.S., why should you apologize for a Christian whos killing in Europe? If you are a Buddhist living in the U.S., why should you apologize for whats happening in Burma? You shouldnt. But somehow, every Muslim here is treated as if he/she is responsible for every Muslim abroad. Please dont misunderstand this! Im totally against violence committed by Muslims and I wish it stops today (or yesterday as they say)! Im just tired of condemning something I dont represent. If someone uses (or misuses) the Quran to justify their violence, its their problem. I dont represent them and they dont represent me. I will do my best to present my understanding of Quran, but I cant speak for others. I cant force my understanding on others either. I hope I can convince them through proof and evidence. But thats about all I can do, within my very limited power. Allah knows best ...
