Should Suarez`s Ban be Reduced?: Leaving Liverpool FC, Luis Suarez - TopicsExpress

Should Suarez`s Ban be Reduced?: Leaving Liverpool FC, Luis Suarez signed with FC Barcelona earlier in July. On 11 July, Barcelona announced on their website that they reached an agreement over the transfer of Luis Suarez. Suarez wanted to come to Barcelona even from the time he was at Ajax and has always dreamt of playing here. Part of the reason is that his wife lives in Barcelona too. Luis Suarez is a flawed genius and his move to Barcelona drew comparisons with another legendary Barcelona forward signing Hristo Stoichkov. It is seen as a match made in heaven especially because after an unsuccessful season here at Barcelona ,Luis Suarez is expected to bring trophies to Barcelona once again fueled by his determination, grit, intensity, talent and hardwork. It is worth noticing that the moment Luis Enrique, new manager of Barcelona signed with Barcelona ,he asked Sporting Director Zubizarreta that if he can sign Luis Suarez. Undoubtedly Barcelona needed a true 9 as much as it needed a CB. Yet after signing a player who is without a doubt the best no. 9 in the world at present and was much needed FC Barcelona was vilified by fans and media alike for signing Luis Suarez as his signing was considered against the clubs motto and the values it represented. Arguments can be made for both sides. But the reality is that Luis Suarez is now a Barcelona player. Should Luis Suarez`s ban be? Suspended Reduced Upheld Cant say Poll Maker The reason why Barcelona was being vilified was that Suarez bit Chiellini when Uruguay met Italy at 2014 world cups Group Stage. Suarez was punished(deservedly). He received a 4 month ban from football and was banned from any football related activity. Since then football players, ex-players and fans all are divided on whether the length of ban was correct or not. Though it should be mentioned at this point that Suarez did apologized publicly and Chiellini himself came out and asked for his ban to be reduced. Barcelona has filed an appeal at CAS in the hope that Suarez ban will be reduced or at the least he will be allowed to train with the team. And Suarez has been called by CAS on 8th August. There should be no doubt as to whether he deserved the ban or not. Because it was the third time he bit someone on field. But does the decision by FIFA was influenced by media. Yes Suarez bit a player and it was childish but how is that worse in comparison to the challenge(foul) by Zuniga on Neymar which ended Brazils hope at the 2014 world cup and injured Neymar for supposedly 2 months, Infact the foul was so serious that had it been some inches above it would have paralyzed Neymar for his entire life .How the bite is worse than a foul by Matuidi which broke all ligaments of Ogenyi Onazis foot at 2014 FIFA world cup match up between France and Nigeria. In both the cases Zuniga and Matuidi were not given any punishment. And the sad part is that in both cases both players dont appear to be going for the ball and it is even more clear in Zunigas case especially. Which brings me to the point that how could a bite be more harmful than fouls which had even more lasting repercussions. Now let us also see the following case. Ronaldos red card vs Athletic Bilbao vs Atletico Madrid Against Athletic Bilbao Ronaldo scratched two players faces and then tried to punch Iturraspe (who was one of the players he scratched too). Why didnt Ronaldo get a ban like Suarez. Just because the foul was in a different competition shouldnt make it less worse. Neither a bite is harmful nor a Scratch (by nails). And both are childish acts. It is to be noted that infact it is a scratch which will leave you a scar and not a bite. People defending Ronaldo will point out that Suarezs incident was his third but it is also to be noted that this wasnt Ronaldos only incident either. During the 4-3 El Clasico earlier this year Ronaldo appeared to be swinging arm at Barcelonas player Mascherano intentionally. Several other players who were not/marginally punished are Chelsea`s John Terry, Atletico Madrid`s Simeone, Manchester United`s Eric Cantona , Real Madrid`s Ronaldo, Pepe, Sergio Ramos and legendary Zidane. Infact Suarezs received ban when he was Liverpool player and this brings me to my next point that even if CAS decides to keep his ban it should only be limited to International games because Suarezs club shouldnt be punished. And this applies even if he had been Liverpools player. Suarezs problem is more psychological and he should be recommended the help of a psychologist by CAS. Upholding his ban is only going to deepen his problem and I reckon he has suffered enough after seeing his Country crash out of the world cup and him being criticized in every section of media. Funny enough, Luis Enrique, newly appointed manager of Barcelona has brought a psychologist with him in his staff. Perhaps Suarez and Barcelona are indeed a match made in heaven. At the end of the day, should FIFA consider harsh fouls as a punishable offence? The answer lies with Sepp Blatter and his men !! FArticles: FootballEnglish Premier LeagueLa LigaInternationals
