Should Tasmanian Devils be reintroduced to the Australian mainland - TopicsExpress

Should Tasmanian Devils be reintroduced to the Australian mainland to help combat feral predators such as foxes and cats? It is obvious that urgent action needs to be implemented to combat these feral threats. It would be wonderful if they were able to compete effectively and help prevent the scourge of foxes, cats and perhaps even rabbits by preying on or interrupting the behaviour of these creatures. What would happen though if the Devils also prey on native species who are already facing overwhelming predatory pressure? Can Devils even survive on the mainland? Although they were once present here they became extinct roughly 400 years ago and only survive as a species on the island state of Tasmania. What caused their initial mainland extinction and would they be able to survive in the current mainland landscape? If they were introduced, all baiting programs would have to cease in the habitats they are introduced to. Although Devils are classed as apex predators they are primarily scavengers who are just as likely to be killed by baiting programs; either directly by ingesting the poisoned baits themselves or indirectly by scavenging the carcasses of poisoned animals. What do you think? A great idea or one with too many unknown variables?
