Should the Dalit parties demand proportional representation? Puram argues that the demographics is stacked against them in the current model where they cannot get enough political clout in a state like Tamil Nadu where OBCs are too large and are traditionally the oppressors of the dalits. In my opinion, alternate voting models are unlikely to come up because the entrenched groups benefit substantially from the current system and they have the numbers. In TN, they should first aim to put together a stronger coalition amongst themselves and then negotiate for better seat sharing with DMK, AIADMK, or other dominant parties. For this, there should have to be a merger of VCK, PT and/or Puratchi Bharatham, or a new party that subsumes people who are traditionally supporters of these groups. I do agree that the current model will never deliver any value to any of the dalit sub-groups in Tamil Nadu.
