Should the Senate be Abolished? Change the appointment process - TopicsExpress

Should the Senate be Abolished? Change the appointment process and expand its powers to balance out an out of control HOC. The Senate should be a non partisan body appointed by a committee of Canadians from suggestions submitted by the general public. Furthermore the Senate should take on the role of protecting the constitutional rights of citizens with the power to investigate and recommend for prosecution any any individual of organization in the country. This would be in addition to their traditional role of reviewing government legislation. To effectively carry out this mandate contempt of Parliament/Senate should be made a criminal offence with mandatory fines, mandatory prison terms and loss of pension benefits. I would also consider making the Senate select appointment committees with the power to fill other appointments such as Supreme Court judges etc. In order to make the Speaker of the House non partisan the Senate could also select the committee to select the Speaker. Do I trust politicians? ABSOLUTELY NOT.
