Should we require US citizens, or US immigrants, to learn the language, as some say? If you think we should, consider these questions. • Which language shall we mandate, and why? English, because it is the language of the majority? • What proficiency standard shall we use? Should we require poor rural folks in southern Appalachia to overcome their accents and meet some English standard? • Since the technology is now available, should deaf Americans be expected to use voice-recognition/text-to-speech devices so they can communicate with hearing people? • Should we require non-Christians to study the Bible enough that they will understand biblical references, since that is the religion of the majority (or should we just turn the other cheek on that one)? • Should Inuit tribes in northern Alaska be included in this mandate, or will we exempt them? • Should French-speaking Canadians be required to learn English? • If 49% of the population of a nation speak one language and 51% speak another, should the 49% undergo a linguistic conversion? • If not, how predominant a majority do you think should be sufficient to warrant a mandate for linguistic homogeneity?
