Shouldn’t media be regulated for its integrity? There is no - TopicsExpress

Shouldn’t media be regulated for its integrity? There is no regulation for media and there shouldn’t be, right? After all we enjoy the many freedoms of speech, etc. in this demo-crazy. However what if the public is misled by an irresponsible media? For example the statistics driven by many media outfits are conflicting when it comes to news reportage, do you agree? Then there are the many columnists and broadcasters who are misfits in the arena (proper description for gladiators in combat) that continue to engage only to cause intrigue (especially in the entertainment sectors), the political environment; creating confusion even for the authorities and the public knowledge of “envelopmental” (pun intended) journalism that generates the wrong public opinion (if we still have one). Where and when should we draw the line? In the academe teachers and professors are required specific degrees to qualify. With the open media everyone is welcome to give his two cents. The internet and social media sites are wide open and should stay open but for the written word on broadcast print and Radio TV considering this is within the realm of the national patrimony, shouldn’t we require an integrity other than the celebrated characters many despise due to their ignorance and yes, stupidity. The public is subjected to misguided information and false perceptions only to confuse civil society. But then again civil society as we know it is but a creation of powers that are but this would be another story. So should we try and regulate media practitioners to at least be educated? Branding is the consistent delivery of the brand promise generating integrity which makes it the brand. So do the media practitioners enjoy the brand? The problem is NO, they do not. And many especially in the provinces (actually even in the cities) get into trouble with their “Attack, Collect; Defend and Collect again i.e. ACDC strategies. As a consequence media PR actioners are summarily executed. The there are the old fogies who have been columnist forever who after time become irrelevant but somehow stay the columns for many to read with irreverence. Biases are obvious for many media actioners and yet somehow they are tolerated by their employers (unless of course they own the media outfits) if not pressured one way or other. The public trust is an all powerful tool if left unchecked can create the situation we have today, dynasties, oligarchies and monopolies. Is it too late? In the Philippines many issues are taken for granted and with discipline not a virtue it becomes annoyingly difficult to cut thru the chase with the incompetent.
