Right now in the Wyoming Legislature there is a bill that been introduced into the Senate (SF 076) that deals directly with 2 man crews. More specifcally, SF 076 requires that there all trains be operated by 2 men in the state of Wyoming. This bill mirrors federal legislation that has stalled. Please read the following excerpt from an email i recieved from the BLET WSLB Chairman..................... Dear Brothers and Sisters, The powerful Railroad lobby has convinced the Senate Transportation Committee members that SF 0076 Rail safety does not need to be heard. The Senators have been told by the Railroads that they have received the message by just the introduction of SF 0076 and they will not pursue single man train operations and so this bill would be a waste of time for the committee to hear. So, SF 0076 will not be heard by the Transportation Committee unless the Senators constituents contact them and ask them to hear and vote for SF 0076 Rail Safety or 2 man crew bill. I have personally talked to all the Senators on the Transportation Committee and they seem understanding and sympathetic to our safety concerns about single person train operation, but I don’t think they will hear this bill unless we push them to do it. The Railroads have convinced them that single person train operations are not an issue in the immediate future. I have done what I can do and now it is up to you, the membership, to contact these Senators. If the Senators receive a sufficient amount of contact for them to pursue this bill I believe that they will hear the bill and vote for it. If you believe 2 men on a train crew is an important safety issue. Please contact the Senators on the Transportation Committee and tell them why the bill is important and that they should hear and vote on it. When you contact the Senator’s be sure to be courteous and mention that you are from Wyoming include your address, what your occupation is and why they should support Railroad safety SF 0076 two man crew bill. Keep the email simple and to the point. It always helps to provide personal experience about why two men are needed to move freight trains safely from your professional opinion.
