Shouts out to Harold for the nomination. This is 10 – nope, 11 – of my favorite/most influential/impactful albums. Im no artist or anything but music has always played a deep, important role in my life. 1) To the Loveless by Boom Boom Satellites: I can’t really explain how or why, but this album changed my life and whenever I listen to it it’s a truly magical experience. It’s always an hour very well spent which clears my head and I usually can’t figure out what to listen to afterward – everything sounds inferior for the time being. 2) The Always Open Mouth by Fear Before the March of Flames: Have you seen me lately? I am the dog-sized bird on the tracks. I have an unhealthy handful of options, and a couple of trains on my back. I’m picking at remains of others’ lives and watching colors and tragic-looking passers-by – I am the dog-sized bird, picking at bones, losing my nerve, constantly calculating – there’s time between trains, I know…there’s time between trains, I know…and a right moment to find a new set of tracks. There’s time between trains and I know exactly how long…but I’m testing my conviction, and I may be primed for picking at any time. 3) TANATOS by 9GOATS BLACK OUT: It’s a masterpiece; a brilliantly-produced album which evokes so many emotions, feelings, and thoughts… This band was very special to me. While the majority of the lyrics are in Japanese, art transcends all barriers and makes you feel it. 4) Ashes Against the Grain by Agalloch: It’s just such a unique album that originally caught me off-guard with its sheer beauty. It has quickly become one of my favorite metal albums. 5) Vespertine by Björk: This and Ashes Against the Grain are my favorite albums to listen to in the winter, which also happens to be my favorite time-of-year. I’ve listened to this and come to personal realizations because of it. The overall reserved, intimate mood of it is perfect for me. 6) Altar by Sunn O))) & Boris: Boris is my favorite band. This is way beyond just a collaboration. I saw the entire personnel of this album perform it live at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple the night before my first day of college. They played a note and the power went out for about a half hour. It’s the best show I’ve attended thus far and Altar is a crushing work of art. 7) Turn On the Bright Lights by Interpol: This, and The Strokes’ Is This It, made me fall in love with indie rock. I feel like love is in the kitchen with a culinary eye; think he’s making something special, and I’m smart enough to try. 8) Worship and Tribute by Glassjaw: I was just a kid playing PJR 2 on my Xbox when I noticed “Radio Cambodia” is a pretty cool song, so I got the CD and thought it had the coolest art ever (to this day, I’ve never placed a needle onto a record on a turntable). Anyway, this album is important for so many reasons. Harold already knows. 9) Miss Machine by The Dillinger Escape Plan: This was my very first “extreme” album. I heard “Baby’s First Coffin” on the Underworld soundtrack, which I bought for Finch’s “Worms of the Earth.” I got my grandma to buy me the CD on release date. I got home, cranked it, LOVED it, and she probably thought I was possessed/insane so she made me return it. I rediscovered it maybe a year later and downloaded it. The album is intense and Chris Pennie is a BEAST. It made me rethink music in general and appreciate it in a new way. 10) Silent Alarm by Bloc Party: This is a fantastic album full of feels and really great drumming. “So Here We Are” and “Blue Light” are two of my favorite songs ever. It kinda reminds me of ATD-I’s Relationship of Command or Pretty Girls Make Graves but a bit colder. 11) Still Searching by Senses Fail: This is an incredible concept album; I think it’s my favorite as far as rock/hardcore goes. I can’t believe it has been almost 10 years since this blew my mind.
