Showcase No. 246 comes from a great new duo from Poole in Dorset and winners of Fatea 2014 Best debut album of year, Ninebarrow. Our chosen song today is Summer Fires is a live version taken from their 2014 album While the Blackthorn burns. We think that 2015 will be a great year for Jon and Jay and they will continue to build on all of last years achievements. A duo to watch. youtu.be/6-QgbSoijPs Ninebarrow are a multi-award-winning folk duo, who are impressing audiences across the country with their innovative and captivating take on the folk tradition. Described by Mike Harding as sounding ‘damn fine’ and by Seth Lakeman as ‘a fantastic duo’, Jon Whitley and Jay LaBouchardiere combine breathtaking vocal harmonies and melodies, delivering original songs that are inspired and rooted in the landscape and history of the British Isles. As well as crafting unique and engaging original material, Ninebarrow also take a wide-range of traditional folk songs and rework them in their own, distinctive way. ‘In their close harmonies and rural imagery, Ninebarrow occupy the middle ground between Simon & Garfunkel and Seth Lakeman: a place of lyricism, longing and masterly songwriting’ (Rick Pearson, Evening Standard Music Critic) Most recently, Ninebarrow were announced winners of FATEA Magazine’s ‘Debut Album of the Year’ 2014 and the duo were also finalists in the prestigious UK Songwriting Competition of the same year. These are not the only accolades the duo have received, having been crowned winners of the Larmer Tree Breakthrough Music Award in 2013. In the same year they were announced number 1 in Drunkenwerewolf Magazine’s ‘Hidden Acoustic Gems of 2013’ and their debut EP ‘Kingdom’ was announced as one of Ukulelehunt’s records of the year. Shire Folk Magazine has predicted that ‘they will become a major force in English folk music’. Following the critical acclaim that the duo have received, they’ve been in high demand and have been receiving bookings at a plethora of folk clubs, music venues and festivals across the country including the likes of Towersey Festival and The Stables in Milton Keynes. As well as headlining in their own right, Ninebarrow have also provided support for some of the folk greats. Most recently, they were invited to support Seth Lakeman at The Electric Palace in Bridport and have also supported the likes of Dave Swarbrick, Blair Dunlop, Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin, Bob Fox, Reg Meuross and Ray Cooper. In 2014, as part of the centenary of the outbreak of World War I, Ninebarrow were invited to take part in a collaborative re-recording of Pete Seeger’s ‘Where Have All the Flowers Gone’ which subsequently received airplay on Mark Radcliffe’s Folk Show on BBC Radio 2 as well as winning FATEA Magazine’s ‘Single of the Year’ 2014. In 2013, Ninebarrow released their debut EP, Kingdom. It was hailed as ‘brilliant’ and exceptionally well-executed’ (Blakjaz.co.uk) and ‘a conduit for rich folk influences and sounds of pure delight’ (Drunken Werewolf Magazine). Since then, Jon and Jay have gone on to record their debut album: While the Blackthorn Burns. Recorded and produced by the duo themselves, the 12 track release has been hailed as ‘a landmark folk album of its time’ (Folkwords), ‘exceptional…totally wonderful’ (Fatea Magazine) with harmonies that are used to ‘stunning effect’ (Brightyoungfolk). It’s also received airplay on Mike Harding’s Folk Show where he said: Ive had lots of requests for this next duo...Beautiful, lovely feel to this. I love it. In May 2014, Folk Radio UK posted the opening track of the album on their website and within 4 weeks it had received over 20,000 plays world-wide and jumped to number 1 on SoundClouds Folk chart. The album was also listed in the Telegraph’s top folk albums of 2014. Engaging, charismatic and humorous - Ninebarrow are winning new fans wherever they go. See them live, and you’ll quickly understand why. ninebarrow.co.uk/
