Showers have tapered off for the most part this evening, but rain - TopicsExpress

Showers have tapered off for the most part this evening, but rain will become likely late tonight and especially into Wednesday as a large storm system centered over the Mississippi Valley lifts up towards the Great Lakes. Well remain on the mild side of the storm with low temperatures near 40. Unseasonably mild temperatures are expected on Wednesday with many areas likely getting into the 50s. Rain is likely with rainfall amounts averaging between 1/2 and 3/4. The storm system will interact with a powerful jet stream, which will result in strong winds. Frequent gusts will top 30 mph with the strongest winds expected late Wednesday into early Christmas morning. A cold front will swing through the region, helping to direct some of the very strong winds aloft down to the surface. Isolated damaging wind gusts in excess of 50 mph cant be ruled out as the front moves through. If these winds are realized, the National Weather Service may have to issue Severe Thunderstorm Warnings Wednesday night or early Christmas morning. Colder temperatures will filter into the region on Christmas Day with a few flurries possible. Limited sunshine is also expected as drier conditions arrive from the west. Temperatures are expected to peak around midnight in the upper 40s, but fall into the 30s during the day. High pressure will provide dry conditions on Friday and Saturday with temperatures back into the 40s. A developing area of low pressure on Sunday will lead to mixed rain and snow showers. Another system will follow on Monday with more mixed showers followed by colder temperatures and scattered snow showers by Tuesday.
