Shrek was a sheep in New Zealand, who gained international fame in 2004 after he avoided being caught and shorn for six years. Shrek apparently hid in caves, and survived by eating scrub grass and shrubs as he could find them. His separation from the herd had an affect on him. He had accumulated 6 years of wool--and was hobbling under the weight it added to his thin and emaciated frame. His general health was poor and it was not likely he would survive another winter under the weight he was carrying and the sparse diet he had been eating. When his shepherd finally found him, he was shorn. His fleece contained enough wool to make suits for 20 men, weighing over 60 lb. He returned to good health as he returned to the herd--and the regular care of his shepherd and the community of the rest of the sheep. This story reminds me of what can happen when we separate ourselves from the community of faith. We can become isolated and spend our days hiding in the shadows--away from deep and meaningful relationships--surviving on what we can find to feed our souls--neglected from general care and being crushed under the weight of all we carry. Jesus--the Good Shepherd--calls us to him--saying, "Come to me all who are weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest..." Jesus restores us to the flock--and as we share life with the flock--and are guided by the Good Shepherd--he restores our souls--leading us in good paths--green pastures and still waters. We were not created to live in isolation--we were created to live in community and relationship with God and other people. The Church--the community of faith--is a great place to come home to--for healing, restoration, feeding and care. Are you disconnected and alone? The Shepherd is looking for you. Come home.
