Shri Budhanilkantha, Kathmandu Shri Budhanilkantha temple is located 8 km north of kathmandu and it is one of the biggest temples of Lord Vishnu in Nepal. The five-meter long sleeping Lord Vishnu statue carved from a type of basalt found miles away in the southern hills, it was apparently dragged here by forced labour during the reign of the seventh-century monarch Vishnugupta, who controlled the valley under the Licchavi king Bhimarjunadev. According to legend the image was lost and buried for centuries, only to be rediscovered by a farmer tilling his fields. Taking photograph of the sleeping Lord Vishnu statue inside the temple is strictly forbidden. However the sleeping Lord Vishnu statue is visible from outside the temple and people from all nationalities are allowed around the temple.
