Shubenacadie Band During the past several months our Chief and Council have had a number of in depth conversations about tribal organizations in Nova Scotia one being the Union of Nova Scotia Indians(UNSI) and the other being Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq(CMM). During these discussions Chief and Council reviewed the overall purpose of tribal organizations and had determined that tribal organizations exist to provide administration support for First Nation communities and Bands. Realizing that tribal organizations provide administration support, Chief and Council decided it would be in the best interest of our band explore the types of services currently being offered to our band by UNSI and do a cross comparison with the services that could be offered by CMM should we align with this tribal organization. During this analysis Chief and Council did learn that CMM already provide our band various support services and if we were to align with this tribal organization we would be able to access other program, services, and supports above and beyond what we currently receive. After much deliberation, analysis, and correspondence with officials from each of the tribal organization our Chief and Council decided it would be in our Band’s best interest to leave UNSI and align with CMM. Chief and Council did acknowledge the history between the Shubenacadie Band and UNSI and our community will be ever grateful for the work that had be done by this organization to protect our rights while setting many different movements in motion during the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s. As we move forward we wish all those involved with UNSI nothing but success. We are excited to begin our work with CMM and its member communities in the future.
