Shut up, crime!!! After I watched Guardians Of The Galaxy I started thinking I should check out director James Gunns other superhero movie, Super. Im a big fan of his sci-fi horror film, Slither (slug-like parasites invade a small town). I liked Slither a lot more, but this one didnt disappoint. Its a more real-world take on Kick-Ass, by way of Taxi Driver. It has an eclectic cast with Rain Wilson, Ellen Page, Liv Tyler, Gregg Henry, Michael Rooker, Nathan Fillion, and Kevin Bacon. Wilson plays a sad sack cook who becomes a superhero called The Crimson Bolt, to rescue his drug addict wife (Tyler) from sleazy drug dealer, Bacon. Ellen Page gives a committed performance as an unstable comic book shop clerk who wants to be Wilsons side-kick, Boltie. Its not quite as audience friendly as Guardians. It is funny, but also violent, profane, and in spots, just plain wrong. Its an indie film that definitely demonstrates Gunns exploitation roots from his Troma days.
