Shut your mouth. By now Shaft may be familiar as to be taken for granted, but when it first became popular, in the early 1970s, there wasnt much on radio that matched it in terms of construction, pace and tone. It was radical and had a monumental influence, and some of us spent nights under the influence of the song and the music on Isaac Hayes other albums. Hayes wrote some immortal R&B songs--including Sou Man, with David Porter, for Sam and Dave--and went on to make great recordings that advanced a creative mode of funk (influenced by James Brown, Marvin Gaye, the Chambers Brothers and Sly and the Family Stone, among others) that soon bore effect on one of Miles Daviss most inventive albums, On the Corner. This version of Shaft, with a full orchestra--mesmerizing drums and sinuous guitar--is as gratifying to see as it is to hear.
