Si Lo Lau market in Phong Tho dist, Lai Chau province in North of Vietnam. Looking at the map of Vietnam, you can see Si Lo Lau commune at the northern tip of Lai Chau province. Si Lo Lau commune in Phong Tho district is home to the Red Dao, Ha Nhi and Mong ethnic minority peoples. The Si Lo Lau kermis is often called “horn kermis” by local people because the festival is only opened on the days of horned animals (buffalo and goat) on the 12-animal calendar. According to the 12-animal calendar, the day of Goat is 6 days after the day of Buffalo. Thus, if the Si Lo Lau kermis is opened on this Saturday, it will be opened again on the next Friday, the following Thursday the week after, and so on. That gives the Si Lo Lau kermis another name of “backward kermis”. The market opens from 7 am. At that time, Si Lo Lau is still covered with the extremely thick fog, making it hard for people to see each other unless they are very close to each other, though you can hear others from a distance. The kermis often closes at about 2 pm when sunlight completely breaks up the foggy net. The kermis functions as not only a marketplace, buying and selling things, but also a rendezvous point for both young and old people. Local people in the northern upland do not say “going to the market”, but “jaunting to the market”. Women there often wear their best costumes to jaunt to the market. They bring home-made products and sell them at the kermis, and buy other necessaries for their daily lives. The Si Lo Lau kermis is the central market of a large area. Even people from Dao San commune, 40 kilometers away, come to the Si Lo Lau on the market-day. Some even walk dozens of kilometers to the kermis just to buy some sundries like sewing things or spices, while others may come to the kermis for a bowl of noodle, or just for meeting and chatting with their acquaintances.
