Sibiu- History and superb architecture As most of you know, Romania had a very turbulent past and Sibiu made no exception. The city lived through good and bad, to reveal itself now at its real value. The jewel of Transylvania, they say! It was the largest and wealthiest of the seven walled citadels built in the 12th century by German Settlers known as Transylvanian Saxons. You can admire the impressive buildings and the fortifications required to protect them, as you stroll along the Old Town. My favorite thing to do when Im there! I always start in the lower part of the city (where back in the days the poor people lived and the manufacturing area was), walk along the narrow streets pass 17th century buildings and then take the stairs to the upper town (where the wealthier part of the population lived). The feeling you get is absolutely unique.
