Sidewinder Sprints – 09/12 Linda’s Speedway Perfect weather conditions and a magical fall like sunset greeted the Sidewinder teams for their 2014 Linda’s Speedway appearance. Along with the 1000cc Sidewinders, the 600cc cars of Jim Young and Aaron Spahr were on hand to represent the traveling division. Lone Linda’s regular, Steve Whary was tasked with upholding the local bragging rights. A smooth fast track produced some great racing and passing opportunities. The first feature saw Jim Young take the win, although lapped traffic helped make a race of it with A fast finishing Steve Whary almost nipping Jim at the line. 3rd across the strip was Aaron Spahr. Zach Overmiller made some great moves to pass the most cars and finish 4th and was heading the points list with Whary and Young in a tie for 2nd and Spahr 5 points further back. The stage was set for the second feature. Overmiller had a front row start and his earlier speed made him an early favorite. It wasn’t to be however as his car suffered electrical issues on the initial start, losing power. The ensuing concertina effect saw Whary ride a wheel and Young take a soft roll in trying to avoid it all. Young and Overmiller were done for the night. On the restart Brandon Yarlett looked like he would repeat last year’s win as he sped away to an early lead. It wasn’t to be however, as Whary made an outside pass late in the race to take over the lead. Finishing was strong was Aaron Spahr in and Brandon Yarlett held on to 3rd. Mike Zielonis had yet another steady night and actually increased his points lead by 2. With Linda’s Speedway on the schedule for the only 2014 appearance and the 2nd and 3rd place point’s positions closing, can Brandon Yarlett continue to hold down 2nd or will Rohan Beasley be able to steal it? A. Brandon was able to hold on but Beasley continued to close the gap. Q. How many local Linda’s 600 teams will take the challenge? Can the Linda’s teams defend their turf ? A. Steve Whary representing the Linda’s locals stood tall . After the first feature, Zach Overmiller had the points lead. How quickly things can turn around as Zach suffered engine issues on the start of the 2nd feature. Steve was involved in the melee that followed and suffered nose wing damage. That wasn’t enough to slow him down as he stormed around the high side to take the win and the overall for the Linda’s locals. Next Week’s Questions; Q. With a double header weekend in store for the Sidewinder teams, and only 5 points races left for 2014, and the Tire Invitational Championship closing, will we see Hoosier continue to bridge the gap or can American Racer get enough points to take the title ? Q. Both 2nd and 4th positions are up for grabs. Yarlett and Beasley are separated by only 8 points and the battle for fourth between Overmiller and Kreider is separated by only 130 points Sidewinder Sprints are accepting 2014 registrations.
