Sierra Leone News: Japan donates Emergency Vehicles for Ebola The Government of Japan has signed a grant Contracts regarding the Project for distribution of Emergency Vehicles and Medical Equipment for combating Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) for Sierra Leone which took place at the Embassy of Japan in Ghana. The Government of Japan through this project donated three fully-medical equipped Ambulances, 3 multipurpose emergency vehicles, 28 motorcycles, 48 Medical beds and added to that, 10,000 PPEs (Personal Protective Equipment) which also arrived in Sierra Leone on Friday which are donated by Tokyo Metropolitan Government. Kaoru YOSHIMURA, Ambassador Extraordinary of Japan to Ghana, stated that the Japanese Government and people of Japan are pleased to support the Sierra Leonean Government and people in fighting EVD, and hope to utilize the equipment for medical staff for EVD patient’s treatment immediately. He also delivered condolences to EVD victims on behalf of the Japanese people. Nasratha Bakie Remoe-Doherty, Chargés d’ Affaires replied that she deeply thanked the people of Japan for the equipment, and promised to use the equipment for fighting EVD continuously, together with support from international community. She stated that “we were not ready to take any preventive EVD action promptly because of less information about EVD and inappropriate Government approach since March.” She also mentioned that EVD has totally changed Sierra Leone’s family value and life style ethically, physically, and mentally, as people stopped shaking hands for greeting warmly, and people pay less a virtue to take care of each other. Ambassador Yoshimura, stated that the Government of Japan has decided to extend emergency aid to Ebola-effected countries including Sierra Leone that is worth 2.4 billion Japanese Yen (approximately USD 22 million) through WHO, and other UN and international organizations to fight EVD in West Africa. Yoshimura, Ambassador Extraordinary of Japan also handed over a catalogue of 28 (Twenty Eight) motorbikes for EVD monitoring granted by the JICA Project (Strengthening Supportive Supervision System in Sierra Leone). The motor bikes have been delivered in four districts. The Government of Japan and Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA) are supporting the Government of Sierra Leone in cooperation with other international organizations and NGOs, and hope the Sierra Leone will be recovering from the negative impacts of EVD.
