Sierra Leone News : MasterPeace Awards 19 National Peace Heroes By Edward Tommy Jun 5, 2014 The Local Chapter of an international youth organization, MasterPeace, has awarded 14 local personalities, two international personalities and three international organizations for their exceptional roles played in ending the decade long civil conflict in Sierra Leone, which lasted from 1991 to 2002. The ceremony was held at the Miatta Conference Hall, Freetown on the theme “Music above fighting, dialogue above judgment, bread above bombs, and creation above destruction, that’s MasterPeace”. In his statement, the Country Coordinator Ambassador Charles Boyle said the award recognizes national and international heroes for their various contributions in putting the war chapter to an end. He called on the awardees to continue their relentless efforts in sustaining the peace. ‘Since war started in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defense of peace must be created, thus the roles the awardees played in ending the country’s war’, he stated. Amongst the awardees were the Late President Alhaji Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, Shirley Gbujama, former Vice President Solomon E. Berewa, head of Peace and Conflict Studies Department, Fourah Bay College, Dr. Mrs. Memunatu Pratt, Deputy Minister of Political and Public Affairs Hon., Karamoh Kabba, the Commissioner National Youth Commission Anthony Koroma and the former chairman of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Bishop J. C. Humper. The two international awardees were the former British High Commissioner to Sierra Leone Komrabai Peter Penfold and the Special Court for Sierra Leone Registrar Steven Rawl. The United Nations, African Union and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) bagged the international organization awards. Representing the President, Hon. Karamoh Kabba said as a responsible government they are committed to enhancing peace, good governance and democracy, which according to him are the prerequisite for sustaining peace and development. Eldred Collins, Chairman and Leader of the Revolutionary United Front Party said the awards were unique as without peace there will be no development, adding that, Sierra Leone has gone through the darkest days in its history as a result of the conflict. He promised that, there will no longer be any war in the country as all Sierra Leoneans have tasted the bitterness of war. “As long as the government continues to create and maintain the platform for good governance, jobs for the unemployed youths, rational utilization of the country’s natural resources, the RUFP will not condone anyone that will take up arms against the hard working government” he maintained.
