Sierra Leone Politics : As Speaker gives her back-up... SLPP’s Leader warns her MPs By Jeneba V. Kabba Jun 5, 2014 Following unholy spate of absenteeism by some elected members of parliament, the Minority Leader in the House of Parliament, Hon. Bernadette Lahai has given a strong warning to all the Members of Parliament from her own Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) who are in the habit of leaving the Well of Parliament during sessions. She said leaving to attend to private affairs must stop immediately. She said such had become habitual amongst her colleagues. She warned that confidence which constituents repose in them to represent interests in Parliament. She disclosed that some of her colleagues usually go to Parliament in the morning to sign Registers and then immediately set off without participating in even preliminary proceedings. She said such attitude is bad for the SLPP especially since they, the opposition, are supposed to be with a sense of full responsibility to serve the Nation in legislature. The Speaker of parliament Hon. Sheku B.B. Dumbuya confirmed that not only the SLPP MPs are in this habit but a number of the ruling APC parliamentarians as well. He urged all of the Parliamentary Whips (both majority and minority) to do more work in line with their functions. As he buttressed the points of the Minority Leader, the Speaker has promised to take very serious action against all absentee MPs.
