Sign the Trust Act - Fairness in Immigration Enforcement Please ask the Governor to sign AB 4: capwiz/cacatholic/issues/alert/?alertid=62937626 AB 4 (The Trust Act) by Assembly Member Ammiano prohibits a law enforcement official from detaining an individual on the basis of a United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) hold after that individual becomes eligible for release from custody unless specified conditions are met. Since its inception, Secure Communities (S-Comm) program has led to the deportation of more than 90,000 residents of California—more than any other state. A 69 percent majority of those deported are categorized by ICE as either “non-criminals” or individuals with lesser offenses, including traffic violations. Even U.S. citizens, survivors of domestic violence, and immigrants arrested only for selling street food without a permit have been unfairly detained due to S-Comm. Unfortunately, this means that legal and undocumented immigrant residents who are victims or witnesses to a crime, currently fear cooperating with police, since any contact with law enforcement can potentially result in separation from their families and/or possible deportation. This responsible solution is aimed to increase cooperation between individuals and local law enforcement and other authorities. Please ask the Governor to sign AB 4. The “Trust Act” would allow us, as a society, to protect the dignity of each person and to provide for a safer community for all.
