Signal Hill Trail walk down via one of the Kramats and along above Bo-Kaap to the Noon Gun, with Tour & picnic – Saturday 3rd January 2015 - @ 9am – [5 Going so Far - Booking Essential – Open to All] - Awakening Intuition Nature Walks & Nature Experience – [Booking Essential – Open to all] => TRAIL MAP ROUTE – mapometer/walking/route_3985997.html - From - intuitionwalks/ /&/ awakening-intuition/ For the first walk of 2015, we add a bit of history into the walk, not forgetting some stunning views along the way. We will meet at the parking area at Signal Hill and walk from the parking area along Signal Hill towards Lions head and then to one of the Kramats. From here we will head down the Jeep track along the side of Signal Hill towards and above Bo- Kaap to the noon Gun. We have all heard the noon Gun being fired but have you seen the interesting historical tour of the noon gun and watched it being fired. For any local a must see. This will also be our picnic / lunch spot as we take in some of the stunning views towards the Waterfront, Table Mountain and Seapoint. On the way back we will head up the Jeep track to the parking area at Signal Hill and stop along the way to get in the frame with Table Mountain and one of the New7Wonders and have our pictures taken. A giant yellow picture frame, the second in a series of temporary frames was unveiled last year on Signal Hill, providing an idyllic vantage point for visitors to compose a photograph of themselves, with friends and family with Table Mountain as the spectacular backdrop. The 2.8m tall by 4m wide frame was produced by local artist Porky Hefer to celebrate Table Mountain being named one of the New7Wonders of Nature, and the interactive artwork is an official World Design Capital 2014 project. NEW FOR 2015 - COST: R45.00 - Per Person for the organised walk, payable on the day This walk will be a great first time out walk for those starting out or joining for the first time as it will be all on the Jeep track ABOU THE NOON GUN --------------------------------- Soon after the English occupation of the Cape in 1795, the Dutch guns were removed from Imoff at the castle and replaced by the latest English 18 pounders designed by Captain Thomas Blomefield. A time signal has been fired in Cape Town by one of these guns since 1806. The daily noon gun is now Cape Town’s oldest living tradition and the two guns used are the oldest guns in daily use in the world. The daily gun was fired as a time signal for ships anchored in the bay, but every Capetonian came to rely on the gun for the accurate time. Pocket watches were scarce and inaccurate during the 19th century and in the outlying towns, where time was loosely divided into four parts: day, night, morning and afternoon. A traveler from Cape Town could expect to be asked if he had the correct ”gun time”. Being fired from the observatory, the accuracy of the noon gun was never questioned and was accepted as the ultimate in accurate time. As Cape Town developed and grew, the noise of the gun became too loud and violent for the city center and the guns were moved to Lion Battery. The first was fired on 4th August 1902. These same guns are still in use today. They are loaded every day by the South African Navy at about 11h30 with 3,1kg bag of gunpowder. The second gun is loaded as a stand – by gun in case the first misfires. DAILY ROUTINE: 11h30 – Remove tampions 11h35 – Check bores clear 11h40 – Load both guns 11h45 – Clear the gun deck 11h50 – Prime the guns 11h55 – Raise flag BRAVO 11H59 – Begin countdown 12h00 – Fire 12h02 – Unload stand – by gun 12h03 – Down flag BRAVO LION BATTERY Lion Battery was built from 1889 to 1890 and was armed with two 9 inch rifled muzzle loading guns. The Battery was remodeled in 1911, with new emplacements being constructed on top of the old works, and rearmed with two 9.2 inch Mk X breech loading guns. These guns could fire a 170kg shell to a maximum range of 28km. The firing of these guns ceased in 1935 due to blast damage caused in Green Point below the Battery. Lion Battery also houses the four 12 pounder guns which are used for the firing of gun salutes on state occasions. ===================================> THE WALK on SATURDAY, the 3rd of January 20154 will be a walk suitable for most levels of fitness, but some minimum fitness is required - The weather forecast is set to be SUNNY ... temp max 24 c. / min 18c. Your need to have decent grip on the trail, as your safety affects the whole group. @ -- Bring along something to eat for the tea break and lunch, trail snacks / fresh fruit, juice or flask for tea / coffee or cup a soup in winter. Sunblock very important and don’t forget your water, this should be at least 2 litre and more if it is a hot day. On route you should be drinking at least 1 full cup every 60min. @ -- What to wear on the hike. Comfortable hiking clothes (trousers / shorts). In winter pants trouser is preferable due to the change of temperatures. Jersey or fleecy top. As the weather often heats up during the day, so it good to wear clothes that you can layer on or off. Good idea to back extra thinner tops and gusty wind can cause the temperature to change quite dramatically. Remember a Warm hiker is a happy hiker ;-). In summer a peak cap for the sun, in winter beanie or buff and gloves just in case and very important a rain coat no matter the weather conditions, as this also acts as a wind breaker. @ -- A backpack (or daypack) to carry your supplies. A backpack with a hip belt is ideal; it allows the strong bones of your pelvis to support the packs weight, easing the load on your shoulders. @ -- As this is a group walk, stay with the group and for the entire duration of the hike. We depart and arrived as a group, this is non-negotiable, in anyone leaving early ***Please note that no dogs are allowed on any of the walks that are on offer.” ===================================> ==> DIRECTIONS From the city head up Kloof Nek towards Camps Bayat the crest turn right into Signal Hill Rdfollow this road for about 3 km until you reach the end.
