Sigurd Olson developed and promoted a wilderness philosophy and succeeded in helping create protected wilderness areas all across America, from the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in northern MN to over 100,000,000 acres of wild lands in Alaska. He believed there are some values that you cannot put a dollar figure on. Values like hearing a loon call or a wolf howl. Being far from human civilization and finding out what America looked and sounded like before cities, farms, and roads were built. How peace feels. We need places we can go where we can hear silence, find natural beauty, and escape human life and schedules, where we can live outdoors instead of in.
