Sikongo Roads receive funding! GOVERNMENT through the Rural Road Unit has released K150, 000 for vegetation control and feeder roads in the newly created Sikongo district in Western Province. In an interview, Sikongo district commissioner Kufuka Kufuka confirmed that the money would be used on six feeder roads in the district and 200 jobs were expected to be created for the local people. I can confirm that as a district, we have received K150, 000 for vegetation control and feeder roads in the district. As you know, most roads have been closed up by scrubs and trees making it difficult to pass through, Kufuka said. He expressed gratitude that the project would empower local people as it was aimed at reducing poverty which currently stood at 90 per cent in the district. Kufuka said he would ensure that he closely monitors the project so that the money was utilised according to its intended purpose and thanked the government for allocating money for feeder roads in the district. Earlier, Kufuka appealed to the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit to send relief food to the hunger stricken district. He disclosed that people in his area were feeding on mangoes, cassava leaves and other wild fruits as they could not afford to buy mealie meal which was selling between K95 and K100 for a 25 kilogramme bag. He explained that mealie meal prices were high in the area because of low supply and high demand for the commodity. The district also caters for people in neighbouring Angola. Sikongo district has a population of 42,000 and poverty levels stand at 90 per cent.
