DHARAMSHALA: Tibetan political leader Dr. Lobsang Sangay will participate in the 18th annual Forum 2000 in Prague on Monday (13 Oct) when he begins the first leg of his Europe visit. The theme this year is ‘Democracy and Its Discontents: A Quarter-Century After the Iron Curtain and Tiananmen’. It will offer a critical reflection on the last 20–30 years of democratic transitions, assess the current state of democracy, and explore aspirations for the future of democracy across regions, topics and generations. Sikyong Dr Lobsang Sangay will take part in a panel discussion on a theme titled “The Significance of Vaclav Havel’s Value Based Foreign Policy” on the second day of the Forum on 13 Oct. Other panelists are Carl Gershman, President, National Endowment for Democracy, USA; Ales Bialiatski, President, Viasna Human Rights Centre, Belarus; Andrew Schapiro, US Ambassador to the Czech Republic and Yoani Sánchez, Blogger and Activist from Cuba. The session will be moderated by John Shattuck, President and Rector, Central European University, Hungary/USA. The Forum 2000 was founded in 1996 as a joint initiative of the late Czech President Václav Havel, Japanese philanthropist Yohei Sasakawa, and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Elie Wiesel. It pursues the legacy of Václav Havel by supporting the values of democracy and respect for human rights, assisting the development of civil society, and encouraging religious, cultural and ethnic tolerance. It provides a platform for global leaders, as well as thinkers and courageous individuals from every field of endeavor, to openly debate and share these critical issues. tibet.net/2014/10/12/sikyong-to-attend-forum-2000-in-prague/
