Siliguri Mahila College students protest suspension of socials Students of the Siliguri Mahila College on Friday held a protest rally against the college union for not allowing them to celebrate socials, the most coveted annual party for students. Covering their mouths with black cloth pieces, the students started from their campus and converged outside Siliguri College. “We have gathered here to condemn the union’s stance against us celebrating socials,” said Mouli Pal, a first year student. These get-togethers are the biggest event for a college and mark the end of an academic year and a fresh beginning. However, it seems that our college union has forgotten this tradition. If they cannot perform their functions well, union members should voluntarily resign.” In response, SFI general secretary Ashmita Biswas said, “The union is sorry for disallowing socials this time, but we are helpless as the managing committee has not given permission. After Christmas when the college reopened on January 2, we had written to the managing committee seeking permission them to hold socials on January 7, but the committee president denied our request.” (HS)
