Siliguri gets ready for Chhat Puja as Bihari migrants throng transport Siliguri, 26 Oct 2014: Airports, bus termini, and railway stations have been packed with large crowd as migrants from Bihar who work in Siliguri are preparing to return to their homes in Bihar to celebrate and infuse ‘new life’ to the Chhath festival, the state’s biggest community celebration. Many of them had booked their tickets two months ago, while some don’t even have a seat. Hence, many are prepared to travel on the roofs of buses, which is a risky venture. HS Siliguri town, too, is getting ready to celebrate the Chhath Puja. The ritual of taking bath by the devotees who take fast is done at several places. Eating bottle gourd or locally known as ‘lauki’ is mandatory during the puja, hence prices of lauki in marketplace is soaring high. One lauki is being sold at prices between Rs 50 and Rs 60, but still there are buyers. The puja committees along with the civic body of Siliguri are seen to gather at the banks of the Mahananda river and construct ghats for the puja and people from every community. HS
