Siliguri to host Shramik Mela 2015 To commemorate this month as the Social Security Month across West Bengal, the state labour department will organise the Shramik Mela 2015 beginning January 17. The three-day fair will be held at Dagapur in Siliguri and state labour minister Moloy Ghatak is expected to inaugurate the event. “The main objective of the fair is to raise awareness among workers in the un-organised sectors on social security schemes that are being run under the aegis of the labour department,” explained joint labour commissioner Mohammed Rizwan. He said his department would set up a free health check-up camp at the fair and educate workers on precautionary measures that need to be taken in avoiding cancer. A free eye check-up camp and cataract operations will also be on offer. Besides, various departments of the state government will organise benefit distribution programmes to registered unorganised workers, while labour welfare centres will stage cultural programmes, added Rizwan.
