SilkAir: 22 Years of Service in Cambodia PHNOM PENH, (Khmer Times) – In less than three months, SilkAir will reach its 22nd year of service to Phnom Penh, the business hub of Cambodia, and its 14th year of expansion to Siem Reap province, servicing the country’s northwest. SilkAir Cambodia operates through two local offices: the Phnom Penh office, and the Siem Reap office. SilkAir Cambodia is currently under the management of Hansoo Tan based in Phnom Penh; whereas, Prak Monyvirak manages the Siem Reap branch. Since SilkAir’s first flight to Cambodia’s capital, the country has shown its true potential as a business and tourist destination. In the almost 22 years since establishing the first flight to Phnom Penh in October,1992, SilkAir has proven itself to be the leading airline – despite strong competition. The airline is among the first few to offer a direct, non-stop scheduled flight to Cambodia’s capital. After eight years in Cambodia, the airline expanded its reach to Siem Reap province. Today, SilkAir operates 11 flights per week to Siem Reap, the home to Cambodia’s Angkor Wat, and a twice daily flight to Phnom Penh. Chief Executive of SilkAir, Leslie Thng, said, “The station has also witnessed and contributed to the fast growing economic development of Cambodia, which has emerged as a serious competitor for international investments in Indochina. SilkAir is both honored and pleased to be part of this growth story.” Earlier this year, the airline celebrated its 25th anniversary at the InterContinental Hotel with the attendance of Singapore Ambassador to Cambodia, Mr. Kevin Cheok, SilkAir’s Chief Executive, Mr. Leslie Thng, SilkAir’s Vice President of Operations, Mr. Goh Boon Hwee, Manager of SilkAir Cambodia, Mr. Hansoo Tan and their business partners in Cambodia. SilkAir (the regional wing of Singapore Airlines) began operation in February 1989 as Tradewinds Airline, before emerging as SilkAir in 1992. The airline has expanded its network via establishing routes to destinations in Asia Pacific. The airline initially began its service delivery to exotic holiday destinations such as Phuket and Tioman, then expanded to business hubs including Phnom Penh, Yangon and Kuala Lumpur. To date, SilkAir operates over 350 weekly flights to 48 destinations in 12 countries.
