On the third day you shall go up to the house of the Lord.” Good morning, the word for today is awe – a feeling of reverential respect mixed with fear or wonder. The word awesome is a much used word in our culture. When I watch the HGTV, every home make-over elicits the response, “awesome” or “amazing!” I often want to send in a list of synonyms for the producers to use to coach the homeowners’ responses. Maybe fantastic, overwhelming, splendid, grand, breathtaking, tremendous, astounding, astonishing, or even awe-inspiring – any would make a suitable substitute! What is it in our lives that makes us stand in awe of something or Someone? That thing or that Person would have to be powerful, wise, personal, fantastic, overwhelming, splendid, grand, breathtaking, tremendous, astounding, astonishing, and/or awe-inspiring. A sunrise or sunset on the lake or ocean, a snow-capped mountain, the hug of a loved one, seeing a friend or family member we haven’t seen in a while – these things are awe-inspiring. Photographs of a bird in mid-flight, a tiny insect on a leaf, a puppy or kitten at play – these things command our attention as well. But the One who is truly awesome is our Creator Who made all the things that capture our attention! “O Lord, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth, Who have set Your glory above the heavens! Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have ordained strength, Because of Your enemies, That You may silence the enemy and the avenger. When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained, What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him? For You have made him a little lower than the angels, And You have crowned him with glory and honor. You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet, All sheep and oxen-- Even the beasts of the field, The birds of the air, And the fish of the sea That pass through the paths of the seas. O Lord, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth (Psalm 8)!” And that God is our Abba, Daddy, Father!! Let us stand in awe!
