Silver Jewellery is Not Costume Jewellery Sometimes I hear - TopicsExpress

Silver Jewellery is Not Costume Jewellery Sometimes I hear people refer to silver jewellery as costume jewellery, and I must say that I take issue with this. Silver is a precious metal that holds monetary value. Actual costume jewellery is typically made from such items as beads and string, plastic, and a whole assortment of materials that have no value, including some harmful ones such as lead and pewter. This sentiment usually comes from people who normally wear gold and other more expensive metals. However, I would like to go over some facts with you. Silver, just like gold and platinum, is a commodity. It gets traded, bought and sold in the same way. Silver may not be as valuable as gold or platinum, but it still has value nonetheless. Furthermore, costume jewellery, when it breaks or is no longer wanted, is thrown away. Silver jewellery, on the other hand, is not thrown away, or at least I havent ever heard of anyone throwing it away. This would literally be like throwing money into the garbage, because in the end, that is what precious metals are; money. When these metals gain in market value, they are worth more money than they previously were. As someone who has dealt strictly in gold for nearly his entire career, I have never considered silver to be costume jewellery. And although I preference myself to gold personally, there is a sizeable and growing market out there that prefers silver. It doesnt always come down to a factor of money, either. I know many people, some of them even wealthy, that prefer silver jewellery over gold for a number of reasons. Some people just like the color of silver instead of gold, as there really is no other metal out there that is quite the same in appearance. Others wear silver because they get allergic reactions to gold. Some people even prefer the designs of silver jewellery, as being a material that is inexpensive when compared to gold, has allowed designers more freedom in the creation process, being able to make bigger or more elaborate pieces. When I hear people refer to silver as costume jewellery, I cant help but think of silver jewellery designer, David Yurman. For those of you that dont know, David Yurman is a popular jewellery designer known internationally for his work in sterling silver. David Yurman has since become a large jewellery company, and has reached the ranks of status in the leagues of Baraka, Tacori, Bvlgari and the like. And yet, David Yurman is a silver jewellery designer whose product generally has a higher retail value than your typical piece of gold jewellery. To me, silver is another medium for creating jewellery pieces, much like how gold is the same. And although I prefer gold, I have no problem working with silver, and I dont devalue its worth. Silver is a respectable material that has a lot of real-world applications, included in which is jewellery. -Joe
