Silver Zone at Bukit Merah View Big day for the senior citizens - TopicsExpress

Silver Zone at Bukit Merah View Big day for the senior citizens at Bukit Merah View ( BMV) yesterday - we had the launch of BMV as Singapores very first Silver Zone for senior citizens. We all know well the challenges our seniors face when navigating the roads. As they get older, they cant move as quickly as they used to. Often they have to deal with oncoming traffic where the drivers dont slow down, making it difficult for them to cross roads. Even when they do, they rush, which is dangerous for them as they could trip and fall in their haste. Like many others, my grassroots leaders had raised this with the LTA rep for our constituency. Am very pleased that the feedback was channelled back, and that LTA took it on board together with feedback from other constituencies. This has culminated in the concept of the Silver Zone - where specific traffic features are added to make motorists within the zone travel at a slower speed and other safety features to allow the elderly to cross roads safely and without putting undue stress on them. The Silver Zone safety features include: - a special sign to denote that this is a silver zone. Any motorist seeing the sign ought to automatically slow down; - rumble strips to slow vehicle speed; - painted marking to remind motorists that the speed limit within the Silver Zone is 40 kmh ( the research having shown that the accident rate at the speed of 40 kmh is markedly lower than the rate occuring at 50 kmh); - chicanes and narrowed lanes to slow vehicles down; LOOK markings at crossing to indicate the direction of oncoming traffic; - ramps to make it easier for senior citizens and the disabled. Had the pleasure of welcoming Parliamentary Secretary for Transport, A/P Faishal Ibrahim to BMV to launch the Silver Zone. Would like on behalf of my elderly and disabled residents and their families to thank MOT and LTA for this initiative. A lot of effort and thought went into the conceptualization of the Silver Zone and the safety features. As for my senior citizens - who are always a very game lot - they enjoyed yesterdays launch. They started with mass zumba ( in my constituency, we firmly believe in keeping everyone fit and healthy - especially the senior citizens. Physical movement is very important for their muscle strength, balance and mobility), followed by a walk around the estate - and topped it off with a yum cha session at Blk 115 Bukit Merah View market. After all that exercise, they deserved a treat!
