Simma Holt, my dear aunt, passed today in Vancouver at age 92. She was truly an amazing woman who lived life to the fullest. She was a trusted friend and advisor to Pierre Trudeau, one of the first female Members of Parliament and reporters for the Vancouver Sun (a 30+ year career), was awarded the Order of Canada for her humanitarian work, a best-selling author, plus an advocate for leaky condo owners and the rights of many. I discovered her about 12 years ago (Im adopted). It seemed everyone knew her but me (we both shared a career in journalism). Im grateful to have had the opportunity to get to know her, hear her incredible stories and learn about her brother (the father I never met) and other family. Its been an incredible journey. I was honoured to take her official photo for her last book, Memoirs of a Loose Cannon. I joked with her this past week that if I ever wrote a book, she would be the first chapter, as she made me the last chapter in her final book. I feel so grateful to have met her. Her fire and passion was truly an inspiration to me and many others.
