Simone Felice Tour Diary Gig No 7/13 Notingham Maze Tuesday November 25 Last time I played at the Maze was in April, and I got talking with this cool guy called Gary. We shared a cigarette and he told me how he’d broken his finger, and had his heart snapped by someone around the same time, and he was still getting over all that, and he might move to another city, (maybe Newcastle Upon Tyne) to cut a clean break. Last Monday night, Gary came to the Manchester gig, and his finger is fixed! he can play guitar again! and then tonight he returned to the place we met, the outlaw village of Nottingham and he brought his new girlfriend, who is hot. Go Gary! There were several other lovely people (Robin and Andy amongst others) in the audience who had been at other Simone shows, and I was not surprised to discover this. He is fascinating to watch and he’s always different. Perhaps this is because he leaps off the cliff every night with his performance, he always commits 100% - and free falling is compelling viewing. Simone is living proof Guy Clark’s song works, he puts on his cape and he soars. Today worked out to be a long day of driving, with a few pick ups around London and then a stretch of M1 up to Nottingham. But we were laughing in the car and I was feeling love and acceptance from my travelling companions and most importantly we were all still high from the musical mountain peak Simone has guided us to the night before at St Pancras Old Church. I had a Costa coffee on the way to Nottingham, small americano extra shot. This is such a frequent occurrence that it doesn’t normally hit the diary entry radar. I sort of know i’m addicted and it’s a bad habit. Help me. The Maze is a rock n roll venue and the promoters Glenn and James fill the place with their unique Cosmic vibes. It’s all seated and people appear to be listening to my music and Paula’s boyfriend is matching me word for word. We travel through a few places together and I play ‘My Heart Doesn’t Age’ for Paula. After the gig we’re packing up the stuff and Glenn and James have the Jackson Browne tribute album on the stereo. Ben Harper’s version of ‘Jamaica Say You Will’ comes on and Simone and I sway and sing along. You can always count on Jackson Browne songs to hold your heart, and you can always count on the Cosmic American guys to remind us these cool cuts are all out there, just waiting to be for you to give ‘em a spin. Here’s one of my favourite Jackson Browne songs: FOUNTAIN OF SORROW https://youtube/watch?v=VITDpayaHus We stayed over at Susie’s place and drank a glass of whiskey before bed and then in the morning her daughter prepared us the best chocolate cake in the world ever. They had a proper coffee machine and I had 3 coffees. Thanks Susie. York next. DW x
