Simple Explanation Time for those who STILL dont seem to grasp the concept: Legal Immigration: When you go through the proper channels, file the proper paperwork, pay the appropriate fees and then follow the proper procedures to become an American citizen. That includes political asylum, refugee status, and the like. The Statue of Liberty was dedicated to the promise of those wanting to start a new and LEGAL life here in the United States. ILLEGAL Immigration: When you jump the fence, dig a hole under, or otherwise cross our national borders because you willingly want to circumvent our sovereignty and rules. There is no excuse for such disrespect and most, if not all, countries would NEVER tolerate such a blatant display. It is a crime and should be considered an act of war. I hope this has helped clear up a few misconceptions.
