Simple Thoughts: 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time God’s word - TopicsExpress

Simple Thoughts: 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time God’s word is the seed we sow for the world. ~ Our first reading begins by saying, “Just as from the heavens the rain and snow come down and do not return there till they have watered the earth, making it fertile and fruitful, giving seed to the one who sows and bread to the one who eats, so shall My word be.” In our Gospel reading today, we hear the familiar parable of the sower and the seed. Jesus breaks open this parable for us and challenges us to be the “good soil” that hear God’s word and allow it to take root. If we allow the first reading to frame the Gospel story, another perspective comes to the surface. In the first reading, the word gives seed to the sower. With this in mind, we can place ourselves as in the parable, not only as soil, but as sower. God’s word is given to us as seed for the world. Like the sower, we should scatter the seed everywhere, over good soil, rocky paths, and thorns. The sower is not concerned with “where” the seed falls. In this way, the word, the seed the sower plants, is hope. Let’s plant hope wherever we can, remembering the promise of God, “My word shall not return to Me void, but shall do My will, achieving the end for which I sent it.” ~ The end for which God sends His word is that we may hear it, plant it in our hearts, allow it to grow and bear its fruit through our lives and scatter its seeds throughout the world, in hope that God’s word will continue the work it was sent for. Scripture Reference (Cycle A): 1st: Isaiah 55:10-11 Response: Psalm 65 2nd: Romans 8:18-23 Gospel: Matthew 13:1-23
