Since 2011, there has been a growing crisis amongst Sudan’s children. A new generation of refugee children from the Nuba Mountains and Blue Nile states have fled their homes due to systematic attacks by forces loyal to the government of Sudan. Many of these children are orphaned or separated due to the violence, and have walked unaccompanied to escape their destroyed communities. Their destination is the makeshift refugee camps, which have few, if any, resources available to meet their needs, and some women in the camps are now caring for over 20 children by themselves. In interviews carried out by Operation Broken Silence staff, several children were showing signs of post-traumatic stress disorder, due to the violence they had witnessed. The staff also noted a serious lack of education, water and sanitation, nutrition, and healthcare, which, along with a variety of other needs, threaten to severely damage the potential of an entire generation. However, this new generation of lost children does not have to continue suffering in the same ways their predecessors did, in the Sudanese Civil War that ended in 2005. As one 18 year old stated during his interview: “Give me an education, give me a chance, and we can rewrite Sudan’s future.” In Matthew 19 vs 14, Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.’ Pray for these lost children of Sudan. That they will come to know their Father in Heaven, and have the resources and opportunities needed to bring about change. Pray for peace and reconciliation in Sudan. Pray that there will be Christian workers in the refugee camps who will love the children with the Love of God, and sow seeds of hope into these young lives.
