Since Buttons was saved (remember that) and since the City - TopicsExpress

Since Buttons was saved (remember that) and since the City responded with a new euthanasia policy (so that a story like Buttons would never happen again) ---we have been made aware of a number of dogs that were euthanized in violation of Haydens law or without due consideration to the rescues working to get them out. We also have watched as the shelter has turned down offer after offer to get animals to off-site adoptions, etc - saying there is no manpower to do it even in the face of volunteers willing to get it done. Yesterday, Nicky was killed despite a volunteer rescue coordinator being told he had til this morning. This morning and last night I was reaching out to help him and a program had accepted him thanks to Stephanie. Then word came down that it was too late - it happened yesterday afternoon. Rebecca Katz is walking into a very difficult situation. We support her efforts. In all honesty, we do not know if it will be possible for an Oakland City run shelter to wake up and do this right - we may all have to wait for a non-profit solution. But IF this is going to happen, we have to be civil, we have to give Rebecca a chance to implement some of her programs and we need to be kind to the people inside that shelter. Many of them are good people. For this reason NKO is going off-line. We cant lie to you and we cant pretend this isnt awful. But we need to respect the process in place now for shelter reform. We dont want any outrage. We dont want anger. We will give this new administration a chance. We will get back to you when we have something to say. And we will be watching the shelter in the hopes of seeing good changes. In the meantime if you want to help - volunteer with Rocket dog or other rescues. Any negative comments here will be deleted. You can PM me but we are done for now. Maria
