Since I do not have a Facebook page, my wife Hilary is posting my comments for me. It is with great sadness that I reflect upon my memories of my warm and exceptional colleague. I knew Steve throughout his entire legal career and had the great pleasure of seeing him grow from an enthusiastic and talented young associate to an ever enthusiastic and even more talented senior partner. One of my favorite remembrances involves a Fourth of July party at our home many years ago. Steve, perhaps remembering my small Weber gas grill from an earlier party, kindly offered to bring his grill and take care of the cooking. Tilden Kim said he would bring the meat and the margaritas. Well, Steve showed up about noon with the biggest grill I had even seen. I had no idea how he was able to fit it into the back of what I recall was a large Suburban. Steve was in his element, and his exuberance made the party a wonderful success. I saw Steve’s party spirit more recently at USC tailgates to which he kindly invited our family. Steve and all the Orrs welcomed us graciously even though we were wearing the opposing team’s colors. He was so happy at those events with his family and wide circle of friends. Steve was an expert in all facets of litigation. I will especially miss his unique skill in dealing with anti-government fringe groups. The importance of this ability cannot be overstated in a law firm that has a large number of public agency clients. Steve never shied away from handling these cases, and I actually think he enjoyed the challenge. He managed to get our clients extracted early in the process in these potentially very costly matters. Maybe it was because he could always see humor in the whacky cases these people would bring. A few months ago I mentioned to Hilary the great job Steve was doing heading up the firm’s recruiting. She asked me whether I had told this to him, and I realized I had not. Luckily, I did tell him the next day, and I am so glad that I did. Steve was able to find exceptionally skilled, personable lawyers and, most importantly, convince them to join our firm. He truly cared for them, and the feeling was obviously mutual. Although Richards, Watson and Gershon will never be the same without Steve, his legacy will live on in the careers and contributions those fine young attorneys he recruited will make in the future. Personally, I will miss him so much. I still find that I expect to see him walking down the hall outside my office. Hilary and I send our sincerest sympathies to Cheryl and the entire Orr family.
