Since I last posted, its been confirmed that Robin Williams is dead. Why does it shock us so, why do we never get inured to such things, when we know that eventually every one of us is going to end? Why does the loss of someone we dont know personally hurt so much? With Robin Williams, part of it is that most of us felt very close to him. You see it in the comments rippling out through the connected world, a genuine sorrow, the feeling of having lost not just an entertainer, but someone we felt close to. Hell live on past our lifetimes and be remembered, as with other important and admired comedians and actors, but I wonder if the generations who encounter him later will be able to feel what we did, even those of us who only saw him in the movies or on television -- this guy is a friend of mine.
