Since a week or so, I see from my window this white ship working in the Minch. It is the French specialist vessel René Descartes laying a fibre-optic cable from Ullapool to Stornoway. This is part of an ambitious project to deliver fast broadband to every place in the Highlands and Islands. And it is an example of the UK at its best. The project is managed by British Telecom and underwritten by Broadband Delivery UK (bduk), a Westminster initiative with particular emphasis on making high-speed connection available in rural communities. The Highlands and Islands investment alone comes to a massive £146 million.
