Since d outbreak of violent attacks by d Boko Haram insurgents in 2009,d groups mode of operation, style nd pace hve amend markedly.Whereas,in d beginning,d attacks were wider in scope nd directed mainly at government installations-whch included d United Nations building nd police Headquarters in Abj-they are now restricted to d fringes of d affected three States of Borno,Adamawa nd Yobe, wit vulnerable civilians populations, especially school children,as targets.Military experts interpret d amend to soft targets as a sign dat d insurgents are retreating nd dat d war is abt to end. However,d opposition nd critics of d Government claim dat insofar as d casualty figures,in human nd material terms, are stll rising,d war against Boko Haram is far frm over.In my humble opinion,d issues is beyond politics.I believe dat, irrespective of political persuasions,Nigerians should b worried abt d current security situation. It is frightening dat witin d last one or two weeks alone,as many as 200 defenseless nd innocent people, including School children, hve b killed by members of d Boko Haram sect.D casualty figures are conflicting, but on d whole,an estimated total 3,500-5,000 people are reported to hve b killed by insurgents since they launched their first attack in 2009.Woman nd children are d worst hit.In addition to d deaths,d estimate of d refugee agencies of d United Nations is dat over 8000 people hve b relocated to neighboring countries, including Cameroon, while they put d figure of internally Displaced Persons(IDP)at 5,000 people.
