Since early 2014, the so-called ‘Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant’ (ISIL) terror group has been carrying out a murderous rampage across Iraq, seizing territory and systematically killing children, women and men, as well as displacing close to two million Iraqis. Canada is committed to taking action to protect civilians and counter ISIL’s barbaric activities and expansionist agenda. On October 7, 2014 the Parliament of Canada passed a motion that will see Canada join coalition efforts to counter ISIL. Canada’s military mission is in addition to the significant humanitarian, development and security assistance that Canada is already contributing to Iraq.
